In a strategic move to accelerate the energy transition within the industrial handling machinery sector, Manitou Group has announced a joint venture with the manufacturer Hangcha Group. The newly formed entity, dedicated to the assembly of lithium-ion batteries, will be based in Le Mans, Atlantic France.
As a worldwide reference in material handling, aerial work platforms and earthmoving equipment, Manitou Group employs 6,000 people worldwide and recorded a turnover of 2.7 billion euros in 2024. The group is currently pursuing its “LIFT” roadmap — a strategic plan aimed at achieving 28% electric machine sales by 2030.
The creation of a joint venture alongside Hangcha Group, an industrial forklift manufacturer founded in 1956, marks a significant milestone in scaling up battery production capacity while strengthening low-carbon industrial capabilities. The goal of this initiative is to help customers replace the lead-acid batteries in their vehicles (such as forklifts and machinery) with more durable lithium-ion batteries to extend their lifespan.
“This venture, created with one of our long-term partners, enables us to accelerate the rollout of our electric ranges, in line with the goals set out in our new ‘LIFT’ roadmap. By joining forces with Hangcha, we significantly increase our battery production capacity and take another major step in our low-carbon transition.”
Michel Denis, President & CEO of Manitou Group
An ideal site in Atlantic France
The decision to establish the joint venture in Le Mans was driven by both strategic and operational criteria. Assembling lithium-ion batteries involves strict safety requirements — including distance from residential areas and fully isolated facilities — which limits the pool of eligible sites.
Manitou Group and Hangcha required a 4,000 sqm heated and insulated building, suitable for precision work and scalable for future expansion. The site also needed to bel within reach of the Manitou Group’s regional locations in Laillé, Ancenis, Beaupréau, and Candé.
With the proactive support of Business Solutions Atlantic France, the regional economic development agency, and the dedicated assistance of their team, a compliant site for battery production was rapidly identified in Le Mans.
Key support for professional relocation
Business Solutions Atlantic France also assisted the companies in navigating regulatory and administrative hurdles, including visa arrangements for incoming expatriates. They coordinated with local employment stakeholders, such as Le Mans Métropole, to anticipate recruitment needs.
A new industrial hub for electric innovation
The site is set to begin operations in September 2025, following a July move-in. It will employ around 30 professionals, including engineers, technicians, operators, and sales specialists.
Beyond technical and operational success, the project reflects a shared industrial vision between Europe and Asia, supporting sustainable development goals and fostering energy innovation across borders.
The Le Mans facility joins a growing list of decarbonisation initiatives backed by local authorities and regional agencies committed to building a greener economy.
